For nearly two decades, the iPhone has been the driving force behind Apple’s success. The iconic smartphone has had a major role in creating a broader Apple ecosystem and building one of the most valuable and recognizable brands globally. Plus, it is also Apple’s biggest money-maker, bringing in more revenue than all its other products combined.
According to data presented by Jemlit.com, the tech giant earned a whopping $5,670 per second from iPhone sales alone in Q2.
Apple Sells $20.4 Million in iPhones Every Hour
In the tech space, no single company matches Apple across all categories. While Google, Samsung, and Microsoft are all strong rivals in their own domains, only Apple combines hardware, software, and services into a fully integrated ecosystem. For nearly twenty years, the iPhone has been Apple`s crown product, generating trillions of dollars in revenue.
Although the iconic smartphone has been on the market since 2007, its sales have skyrocketed in the past four years. Thanks to premium features like top-quality cameras and powerful chips, and seamless updates, iPhone users became hooked to their devices, fuelling steady revenue growth. The iPhone’s rising popularity in markets like India further boosted sales, pushing its revenue to record highs, far above any other segment of Apple’s business. The company’s official data show just how big that difference is.
In the three months ending June 29, Apple grossed a whopping $96.4 billion, ranking third among the GAFAM giants. Nearly half of that value, or $44.6 billion, came from iPhone sales. This figure is even more impressive when broken down into smaller time scales. Based on its quarterly revenue, Apple grossed $20.4 million per hour, $340,000 per minute, and mind-blowing $5,670 per second from the iPhone alone. To put that in perspective, Apple made in just eight seconds from iPhone sales what the average US worker makes in a year, around $50,000.
Although other Apple product lines trailed the iPhone, their per-second revenues were still impressive. For example, services brought in $3,485 per second or $12.5 million per hour in Q2, nearly 40% less than the iPhone. Apple’s third-largest product line, wearables, home, and accessories, followed with just over $1,000 per second, or $3.6 million per hour.
iPhone Lifetime Sales Climb to $2.1 Trillion
With $44.6 billion grossed in Q2 and another $46.8 billion in the first three months of the year, iPhone lifetime sales have climbed to shocking highs. Since 2007, Apple has grossed a whopping $2.1 trillion from iPhone sales, three times the revenue of Apple services, five times more than Mac sales, and nearly six times more than iPad sales.
To put that in perspective for an average consumer, the iPhone alone has generated nearly double the value of a year’s worth of US online shopping. It is even more shocking that Apple grossed twice as much from iPhone sales as NASA has spent throughout its entire history.
